Where 2007 was all about The Children of Hurin, 2008 was the year of variety and saw some very beautiful and interesting new Tolkien books. Of course the deluxe edition and reprinting of Tales from the Perilous Realm got a lot of attention. Alan Lee's art work was all over the place since it was used for this new edition and there was also printed a paperback version of his Lord of the Rings Sketchbook. One of the most interesting publications of 2008 was Tolkien on fairy-stories by Verlyn Flieger and Douglas A. Anderson - a book any serious Tolkien fan should read. I also very much enjoyed Tolkiens Oxford: Oxford through the eyes of Tolkien - a new book by R. Blackham and the excellent Tolkien, Race and Cultural History: From Fairies to Hobbits by Dimitri Fimi. Also in 2008 we saw the publication of some high quality editions by Walking Tree Publishers.
