The Lord of the Rings, by J.R.R. Tolkien. Published by Houghton Mifflin, 1955/1955/1956 1st Editions, 2nd imp./3rd imp./1st Impressions respectively.
A beautiful set of first editions of this classic of fantasy literature.
The set is housed in a custom slipcase to show and protect this beautiful set.
The set is all original cloth with the correct original dustjackets.

The Fellowship of the Ring corresponds to the 3rd impression of the UK 1st Edition, but is the 2nd US impression, as Houghton Mifflin did not order any of the 2nd UK impressions. The Very Good dustjacket of the Fellowship exhibits a small amount of loss to the corners and tips of the spine area, along with some minor chips to the back panel and flap fold area. The spine is lightly faded but the front panel still shows nice bright colors. There is a couple of small pinholes on the spine, and a larger chip at the rear bottom spine fold area.

The Two Towers Near Fine dustjacket exhibits all the correct issue points for this early copy, including the "stripe, gap and cufflink" points. There is only minor rubbing at the spine fold area, no loss or chips, beautiful bright colors, a tiny bit of fading to the spine, hardly noticeable. The Fellowship dustjacket has the photo of Tolkien in a 'V' on the rear panel, is not priced, and has the 'w' nicked on the front flap, line 11.

The Return of the King dustjacket has the oversized '5' in the price with double uprights, the correct issue point for a true 1st Impression. The Very Good Plus dustjacket on The Return of the King shows some rubbing and minor loss at the spine tips and along the flap fold with minor loss to the tips. One closed tear with a pinhole sized loss to the front panel, the only other fault, a bit of soiling to the white areas, mainly on the back panel and flaps

The books are tight and clean without inscriptions or writing, no foxing or offsetting noted. The Fellowship does have a book plate on the front pastedown, hidden by the dustjacket flap. None of the dustjackets are price clipped, and all lack any foxing whatsoever. Besides being a truly beautiful looking set, this set is very scarce and collectable. The original maps are present in all three volumes, no extra folds or tears noted. A small bookstore sticker on the rear pastedown of the Return of the King.

Digital photo's available, inquire if interested.
